Why it matters
Emmanuel’s own framing: “You must evolve your product so that your value gets delivered by APIs, CLI, MCP and Skills just as well as through a UI, because the former is how agents will use it. And you must transform your product so that you are still growing and profitable while headless.” That second sentence is the part teams tend to skip — it’s not enough to technically expose an API; the business model has to keep working when a growing share of usage never touches the UI.
The idea has public backing from platform leaders Emmanuel cites: Aaron Levie (CEO, Box) — “You have to be completely comfortable serving up your value proposition as much through agent on or off your platform, as you are your own interface.” Dharmesh Shah (Founder & CTO, HubSpot) — “Being agentic is not just about agents running on our platform, it’s about agents running our platform.”
How to apply it
- Map every piece of value your UI currently delivers and check whether it’s also reachable via API, CLI, MCP, or Skill — gaps there are gaps in headless readiness.
- Revisit pricing, upsell, and engagement mechanics that assume a human is looking at a screen; those need a headless equivalent.
- Treat “be comfortable being headless” as a product stance, not a one-time integration project — new features should ship headless-capable by default.
FAQ
Is a headless product the same as an API-first product?
They're closely related. API-first is about how you build (contract before implementation); headless is about the end state — that the product's value works without a UI in the loop at all.
Doesn't going headless mean giving up the UI?
No. The point is both/and: your product should work fully headless for agents while still growing and staying profitable through its own interface for humans who want it.
What's the business risk of not being headless?
Agents that can't find an API, CLI, or MCP surface simply move on to a competitor that has one — per the "if it can't find one, it moves on" principle from the Agent-Facing Product framing.
How do I know if my product is "comfortable" being headless yet?
If removing your UI entirely would break most of your product's core value for an agent-driven user, you're not there yet.
Where did this term come from?
Emmanuel adapted it from "headless CMS" and applied it to the whole product surface, publishing the framing alongside quotes from Box's Aaron Levie and HubSpot's Dharmesh Shah.
