API design isn’t a developer skill anymore. It’s a PM skill.
Abhishek Katiyar posted this last week:
“I think every PM, not just AI PMs, should be learning about good API design right now. The product interface is shifting from ‘humans ⇔ apps’ to ‘humans ⇔ agents ⇔ apps.’”
I’ve been saying this for 15 years. But hearing it from someone building AI products at Amazon’s scale hits different. He’s right.
If you want to build for agents, stay relevant, and be forward-looking, this is THE skill. Agents need structured, composable endpoints, not pixel-perfect flows.
Some people think that APIs and API design should not be a PM concern. But if you know what you’re doing, APIs can be a product, not a byproduct. The design choices, the trade-offs, the “why” behind every endpoint is product work.
Abhishek Katiyar called it product sense. I call it the PM skill nobody’s talking about yet.
